Since last spring, the European Union has agreed to send a delegation of Parliamentarians in mid-October to visit Rosia Montana, the potential site of Europe's largest open cast gold mine. A few days ago the visit was postponed until December. Yet in the coming weeks, the Canadian company planning to develop this project will be submitting their Environmental Impact Assessment, and many locals will be unable to talk to the delegation about their concerns for their health, loss of livelihood, environmental impacts and forced resettlement. December will be too late. Write a letter to the EU President, asking him to reconsider the postponement.

Support an effort to get the World Bank out of financing destructive oil, gas and mining projects. At the behest of non-governmental organizations from around the world, the World Bank agreed to review its investments in oil, gas and mining to determine their development impact. The World Bank's Extractive Industries Review (EIR) is now almost done. So far, the report, despite massive problems, contains some strikingly strong recommendations. Over the next few weeks, the trick will be to keep them in and build further on them.

Action Alert Archives : August 21, 2003

The World Bank and other donors have vowed to fight corruption. On August 15, 2003, a Lesotho Appeal Court dismissed the appeal of Acres International, a Canadian engineering firm, to a conviction of bribery related to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Acres is a repeat customer at the World Bank and EDC, yet neither have said how they are going to treat this conviction. Write the World Bank and EDC to let them know what you think!

The 21st Congress on the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) was held in Montreal, Canada, June 16-20 2003. Over 1200 representatives from mining and hydro companies were present to develop a new Code of Ethics for the industry. However, Canada has yet to follow up on the progressive recommendations put forth by the World Commission on Dams (WCD), despite contributing over $100 000 towards its process.

We need your help. On December 21, 2001, EDC released an environmental assessment policy, called the Environmental Review Directive (ERD). Unfortunately, with this new Directive, disasters are likely unpreventable. It is a very flexible document, written in loose language that leaves much room for interpretation. Write EDC President Ian Gillespie, and Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew urging them to strengthen the directive.

The Export Development Act, that governs the work of the Export Development Corporation, is under review and about to table amendments to Parliament. These amendments, however, do little to redress continuing concerns about EDC's disclosure policy, its environmental review framework and international human rights obligations. Send a letter to Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew voicing these concerns.

Over the years, the Export Development Corporation (EDC) has funded countless projects that have had devastating impacts on the environment. EDC is exempt from the Access to Information Act and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. Write letters to the Minister of Environment and the Prime Minister asking that EDC have social, environmental and human rights assessments for the projects that have significant potential or known impacts, and disclosure of project-specific information.
