Projects

This page links to a number of projects where we have worked in international solidarity with local communities to various degrees opposing different types of projects in different regions of the world. In some cases, the projects rely on World Bank funding. In others they involve Canadian companies that may be seeking, or have secured, trade financing support from Export Development Canada (EDC). Sometimes they involve both. Regardless of the source of funding, in all cases, the communities have contacted us because they are concerned about the significant adverse environmental, social and human rights impacts that the projects entail.

We work to:

  • Promote adherence by public international financial institutions supporting Canadian companies to internationally accepted standards regarding human rights, environment and development; cease all lending for environmentally and socially destructive projects; and use specific projects to highlight the existing unsustainable lending and reinforce the need for institutional reform.
  • Support communities both locally and globally in their struggle against publicly-financed Canadian companies.

Acquittal of Congolese Soldiers and Canadian Mining Employee in War Crimes Trial Criticized - July 20, 2007

This statement from Congolese and international NGOs brings attention to the trial and acquittal of nine Congolese soldiers for war crimes, and three employees of Anvil Mining for complicity in war crimes in relation to the deaths of at least 73 civilians in Kilwa, DRC in October 2004. It was the first time in the DRC that foreign employees of a multinational company – including one Canadian – have been charged with complicity in war crimes. Citing obstructions, irregularities, and political interference, NGO observers claim the trial failed to conform to international legal standards. Included is a link to the full report.

The Halifax Initiative

The Halifax Initiative is a Canadian coalition of development, environment, faith-based, human rights and labour groups.

Our goal is to fundamentally transform the international financial system and its institutions, namely the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and export credit agencies.

By doing so, we hope to achieve poverty eradication, environmental sustainability and the full realization of human rights.
