The Tobin tax

Congratulations to Canada for being the first country in the world to pass a government resolution in favour of a small tax (0.1 to 0.25 per cent) on currency speculation.. Thanks to Lorne Nystrom of the NDP, who proposed the motion, and to Finance Minister Paul Martin, other Liberals and members of other parties, who voted for this Private Member's Motion.

In this age, prone to cynicism and to pessimism, one is heartened to see so many of our Members of Parliament rise above the inclinations of partisan politics and vote for a worthy tax that could provide more funding for development aid to the poorest people in the world, so many of whom are children.

The Halifax Initiative

The Halifax Initiative is a Canadian coalition of development, environment, faith-based, human rights and labour groups.

Our goal is to fundamentally transform the international financial system and its institutions, namely the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and export credit agencies.

By doing so, we hope to achieve poverty eradication, environmental sustainability and the full realization of human rights.
