Export agency to open books
Mark MacKinnon, Globe and Mail
Tuesday, May 15, 2001
Ottawa -- In an effort to counter a damning report expected to be handed down today, the federal government's export-development agency is planning to open its books to public scrutiny for the first time in its 32-year history. Sources say that interim auditor-general Sheila Fraser's report will harshly condemn the Export Development Corporation for ignoring environmental and social factors in choosing which projects to fund. A group of non-governmental organizations said yesterday the EDC's reckless lending has supported projects that uprooted families and wrought environmental disruption.
